Jaiswal ton and Gill fifty catapult India to 215-2 against England by tea
LEEDS, England (AP) — An unbeaten stand of 123 runs between Yashasvi Jaiswal and captain Shubman Gill catapulted India to 215-2 against England by tea in their series-opening test at Headingley on Friday.
Jaiswal was 100 not out — the first opening batter from Asia to score a hundred at Headingley — while fighting apparent forearm cramp, and Gill was 58 not out after a wicketless second session.
They rebuilt India’s innings after two wickets were lost on the stroke of lunch, which India entered at 92-2.
They both had lucky breaks straight after lunch.
Gill almost ran himself out on 1 and Jaiswal was hit plumb on the toe on 45 by a Brydon Carse in-swinging yorker, but it was a no-ball.
After that they cruised at a cracking pace on a flattening pitch and against a softening ball as the skies clouded over.
Jaiswal reached 50 off 96 balls, his 15th fifty in 20 tests. He turned it into a hundred for the fifth time, and third time against England. The second fifty flew off 49 balls.
Gill got to his 50 off 56 balls with his eighth boundary, pulled through midwicket. The first-time captain underlined his new authority with the fastest fifty of his 33-test career.
Their 100 partnership came up in 20.1 overs, as England struggled to stem the runs.
Spinner Shoaib Bashir was introduced halfway through the session, but even he was bashed around.
England placed a man at deep point in anticipation of one of Jaiswal’s favorite shots, but he simply rose on his toes to carve pacer Josh Tongue high over the fielder for the first six.
Jaiswal began in his 80s to show that apparent cramp in his right forearm was painful. But after on-field treatment he carried on, and stayed in the 90s for only six balls.
After reaching his century with a single, he celebrated by running around the pitch swinging his helmet and punching the air.
India added 123 runs in 25.3 overs in the session.
