QB Tyler Van Dyke, dealing with injuries, ruled out for Miami against Clemson

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke was held out Saturday against Clemson because of injuries, and was on the sideline in warmups instead of a uniform.

Van Dyke revealed after last week’s Atlantic Coast Conference loss to North Carolina that he has been dealing with an injury to his right hand, which is his throwing hand. He has also been dealing with a leg injury, the specifics of which have not been revealed by the Hurricanes.

Van Dyke was on the field before the game, presumably to gauge whether he could play or not. Emory Williams started in Van Dyke’s place for Miami, which came into the game on a two-game losing streak and fell out of the AP Top 25 after last week’s 41-31 defeat against the Tar Heels.

The news changed the way sportsbooks viewed the game. Clemson had been a 3-point favorite for much of the week and was a 3 1/2-point favorite two hours before the game, but after the decision on Van Dyke became known the line on FanDuel Sportsbook grew to Clemson by 6 1/2 at kickoff.

Miami lists Van Dyke, Williams and Jacurri Brown on its depth chart. Williams entered Saturday 12 for 15 this season for 144 yards in three appearances, with no touchdowns or interceptions. Brown saw action during eight games in 2022 and completed 27 of 45 passes for 230 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.

Van Dyke entered Saturday as the No. 2 passer in terms of accuracy in Miami history, completing 64.4% of his passes with the Hurricanes — just behind D’Eriq King’s 64.7% rate. Van Dyke has completed 129 of 183 passes — 70.5% — this season for 1,721 yards, 16 touchdowns and six interceptions.

He was limited by a shoulder injury last year and completed 63% of his passes with 10 touchdowns and five interceptions in nine games, some of which he could not finish. He threw for 25 touchdowns and six interceptions on his way to winning ACC rookie of the year in 2021 for Miami.
