Yemeni forces kill 7 alleged al-Qaida

Government forces have stepped up attacks during the past two weeks against al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, considered the most active branch of the group in the world. Washington has assisted the Yemeni authorities with logistics, training and drone attacks.

Security forces pursued the militants into Hudayda, where clashes lasted for nearly two hours. The officials say two soldiers and two militants died while four were arrested. They spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

The U.N. confirmed in a statement that two of its staff members were abducted and later released in the capital of Sanaa. The statement provided no further details but thanked “efforts made by the Yemeni authorities in obtaining their release.”

Yemeni tribesmen kidnap 2 Egyptian technicians

The security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity according to regulations, said authorities are trying to find out the identity of the kidnappers and if there were any demands. He said he could not reveal the names of the Egyptians.
