Cass Tech pulls away from Shamrocks for Division 1 title
DETROIT (AP) — Senior quarterback Rodney Hall threw for 220 yards and five touchdowns, and Donovan Peoples-Jones had 118 yards receiving and two scores as Detroit Cass Tech beat Detroit Catholic Central 49-20 in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1 final.
Donovan Johnson finished with 89 yards rushing and two touchdowns Saturday at Ford Field in Detroit, and Teone Allen added 60 yards receiving and two scores for the Technicians (14-0), who won their third state title in six years.
Nicholas Capatina ran for 85 yards and Isaac Darkangelo had 41 yards rushing and a touchdown for Catholic Central (13-1). The Shamrocks were seeking their first state title since 2009.
After falling behind 7-0, Catholic Central scored the next two touchdowns, including Jack Morris’ 35-yard interception return, to take a 14-7 lead. The Technicians dominated the rest of the way, scoring 42 unanswered points.
Johnson’s 60-yard scoring run gave Cass Tech a 21-14 lead in the second quarter.
