Patel takes 4-5 as Lahore routs Quetta in PSL; Peshawar wins
RAWALPINDI, Pakistan (AP) — Spinner Samit Patel grabbed four wickets for just five runs in four overs as Lahore Qalandars recorded an emphatic eight-wicket victory over PSL defending champion Quetta Gladiators on Saturday.
Hosts Lahore had 49 balls remaining as Quetta lost its fourth straight game in the Pakistan Super League after Patel struck on a sharply turning wicket.
Also Saturday, Peshawar Zalmi dropped five catches at Rawalpindi but still beat Islamabad United by seven runs via the Duckworth/Lewis method in a rain-hit game. Peshawar was 85-2 in nine overs, and ahead on D/L by seven runs, when rain stopped play. After it subsided, the target was revised to 106 in 11 overs, but just when the action was about to resume, rain arrived again and umpires called off the match.
Patel bamboozled Quetta’s top-order batsmen with his left-arm spin with the score 21-6 after six overs. Sohail Khan (32) and No. 10 batsman Zahid Mahmood (19 not out) carried Quetta to 98-9, its second-lowest total in PSL history.
Mohammad Hafeez (39 not out) and Ben Dunk (30 not out) eased Lahore to 100-2 in only 11.5 overs that left Quetta with six points from eight games.
Hafeez and Dunk put on an unbeaten 68 runs off 41 balls as Hafeez finished off the game with a six over long-off off legspinner Zahid Mahmood, who played instead of Naseem Shah after the fast bowler was ruled out for at least two matches due to a sprained ankle.
Lahore is at the bottom of the table with four points from two victories in six games while Quetta holds the No. 5 spot. The top four in the six-team competition will advance to the playoffs.
Earlier at Pindi Cricket Stadium, Islamabad captain Shadab Khan hammered 77 in 42 balls after twice being dropped. Colin Munro (52), who also survived an early chance, added his third half-century in this season’s PSL as his team amassed 195-5 in 20 overs. Colin Ingram (41) and Rizwan Hussain (5) were also dropped.
Kamran Akmal then made 37 off 21 balls and Tom Banton scored an unbeaten 20 for Peshawar.
Peshawar is now joint leader — alongside Multan Sultans — with nine points from eight games. Multan has played two fewer matches than the 2017 champion. Islamabad is third with seven points from eight games.
Players at both Lahore and Rawalpindi donned pink caps in a breast cancer awareness campaign as they walked onto the field at the start. The stumps were also painted pink and health messages shown on the giant screens at the Pindi Cricket Stadium and Gaddafi Stadium.
