Ryder Cup at a glance

GUIDONIA MONTECELIO, Italy (AP) — A brief look at the matches Friday at the Ryder Cup at Marco Simone (all times EDT):

THE SCORE: Europe 6 1/2, United States 1 1/2

THE SWEEP: Europe won all four matches in the opening session for the first time in their Ryder Cup history.

THE SHUTOUT: The Americans failed to win a match on opening day of the Ryder Cup for the first time, getting only three halves.

SHOT OF THE DAY: Jon Rahm holed a 35-foot eagle putt from the front of the 18th green that gave Europe a halve.

FITZPATRICK FOURBALLS: Matt Fitzpatrick played his first fourballs match in his third Ryder Cup. He was 6 under through six holes and won five straight holes on the front nine. He and Rory McIlroy went on to a 5-and-3 win over Collin Morikawa and Xander Schauffele.

HISTORY LESSON: The five-point lead matched the largest lead after one day in the era of 28 total matches. The other was Europe at Oakland Hills in 2004. It went on to win by nine points.

KEY STATISTIC: Three matches reached the 18th hole. Europe won two of those holes to earn halves.

NOTEWORTHY: All 12 players from both teams competed in at least one session. None of the fourballs teams were the same as the foursomes teams.
