Report: 5 Syrian chemical facilities to be destroyed by June

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — A new report says all five of Syria’s underground production facilities for chemical weapons will be destroyed by June.

The latest report by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press, also notes that work continues toward the destruction of seven aircraft hangars that were used as additional production facilities.

The destruction is a key part of the elimination of Syria’s chemical weapons program, which the U.N. Security Council ordered in September 2013.

The U.N. and the OPCW have said all 1,300 tons of Syria’s declared chemical weapons and agents have been removed.

But U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s cover letter for the new report says talks continue between Syria’s government and the OPCW on Syria’s “subsequent amendments” to its initial declaration.
